Matcha Tin vs Pouch: Which Packaging Is Better?

2026 07/27

customized matcha packaging

Matcha is highly sensitive to oxygen, moisture, light and heat. Once its bright green colour, fresh aroma or smooth texture begins to deteriorate, even high-quality matcha can lose much of its market appeal.

That is why the choice between a tin and a pouch should not be based on appearance alone.

For most retail, e-commerce, café and refill products, a properly designed high-barrier pouch offers a more practical balance of freshness protection, transport efficiency, printing flexibility and packaging cost. Tins remain useful for premium gift products, ceremonial matcha and brands that want a reusable rigid container.

For higher-value matcha, the strongest solution is often not a choice between the two. A sealed high-barrier pouch inside a decorative tin can provide both reliable product protection and a premium customer experience.

Matcha Tins or Pouches: A Practical Comparison

Packaging Consideration
Matcha Tin
Matcha Pouches
Protection from light Excellent Excellent with opaque, foil or metallised films
Oxygen barrier Depends on lid and inner seal Can be engineered through the film structure
Moisture barrier Good when properly closed Strong with the correct barrier and sealing layer
Reclosability Slip lid or screw lid Zipper, powder-proof zipper or pocket zipper
Physical protection High Moderate to high depending on structure
Shipping weight Heavier Lightweight
Storage efficiency Requires more space Ships and stores flat before filling
Printing area Limited by shape Full front, back and gusset printing
SKU flexibility Less flexible for frequent changes Suitable for multiple flavours, grades and pack sizes
E-commerce suitability Premium but bulky Lightweight and parcel-efficient
Typical use Gift sets and premium ceremonial matcha Retail, café, e-commerce and ingredient packs

What Matcha Packaging Actually Needs to Do

The fine particle size of matcha creates more contact area with the surrounding environment than whole tea leaves. This makes the powder particularly vulnerable once it is exposed to air or humidity.
In a real packaging project, four areas require the most attention.

Control oxygen exposure

Oxygen gradually affects the flavour, aroma and colour of matcha. The packaging material therefore needs a low oxygen transmission rate, but the film itself is only one part of the system.
The fill level, residual headspace, sealing process and number of times the customer opens the package also influence product freshness.
For premium matcha or products with a longer distribution cycle, nitrogen flushing may be considered. It is most effective when combined with a reliable high-barrier film and a clean top seal.

Block light

The bright green appearance of matcha is closely connected with perceived freshness and quality. Transparent jars and large clear windows may look attractive in photographs, but they expose the powder to light during retail display and storage.

An opaque metal tin provides complete light blocking. A foil, metallised or fully printed opaque pouch can provide the same functional protection with less packaging weight.
For this reason, MSTPACK normally does not recommend large transparent windows for matcha products intended for long shelf storage.

Prevent moisture ingress

Matcha absorbs moisture easily. Once exposed to humidity, the powder may clump, become difficult to scoop and lose its original texture.

A suitable matcha package requires a strong moisture barrier and a stable heat-seal layer. A zipper helps the customer close the pack after opening, but it does not replace the original hermetic top seal.
The area around the zipper also needs careful attention because fine powder can become trapped in the closure and reduce its effectiveness.

Maintain seal integrity

Even a high-performance film cannot protect the product if the seal is weak or contaminated.
During filling, fine matcha powder can settle around the seal area. This may lead to channel leaks or inconsistent sealing if the packing line is not properly adjusted.

When developing custom matcha packaging, the pouch structure should be tested with the actual filling equipment, sealing temperature, dwell time and production speed.

Which Packaging Is More Sustainable?

A tin and a pouch have different environmental advantages.
Metal tins are widely recognised as recyclable in markets with established collection systems. They can also be reused for refills or household storage.

At the same time, tins require more raw material, more shipping space and more transport weight than flexible pouches.

Pouches use less material and can reduce logistics impact, but some conventional multilayer structures are difficult to recycle.
The package first needs to protect the matcha successfully. A lightweight package that causes premature colour or flavour deterioration is not an effective sustainability solution.

MSTPACK'S Recommendation

For most matcha brands, a custom high-barrier pouch is the most efficient starting point.
It can protect the product from oxygen, moisture and light while offering lower shipping weight, flexible printing, multiple pack sizes and convenient resealability.

Tins remain valuable when premium presentation, physical protection or long-term reuse is part of the product strategy.

For high-end ceremonial matcha, a sealed inner pouch combined with a reusable tin often provides the best balance of protection and customer experience.

MSTPACK develops custom matcha powder packaging for retail brands, cafés, tea suppliers, ingredient companies and private-label projects. Available options include flat pouches, stand-up pouches, flat-bottom pouches, high-barrier laminates, refill packaging and recyclable or compostable material directions.

The final solution should always be based on the product, filling process, shelf-life target and sales market rather than a standard material specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tins better than pouches for matcha?
Tins provide excellent light and physical protection, but they are not automatically more airtight. A properly sealed high-barrier pouch may provide stronger oxygen and moisture control than a tin with a loose-fitting lid.

Can matcha stay fresh in a pouch?
Yes. Matcha can be protected effectively in an opaque pouch with suitable oxygen and moisture barriers, a reliable top seal and the correct dimensions for the fill weight.

What is the best pouch for matcha powder?
The best format depends on the pack size and sales channel. Small flat pouches are suitable for premium matcha and refills, while stand-up or flat-bottom pouches work well for retail and foodservice products.

Is aluminium foil packaging suitable for matcha?
Aluminium foil laminates are suitable when strong oxygen, moisture and light protection is required. The finished structure and seal performance should still be tested with the actual product.

Does a matcha pouch need a zipper?
A zipper is recommended for products that will be opened several times. The pouch should also be heat sealed above the zipper before sale to protect the product before first opening.

Can matcha be packed in kraft paper?
Kraft paper alone does not normally provide enough barrier protection. A kraft-look pouch requires an internal barrier and food-contact sealing layer.

Should matcha packaging include a window?
A window is generally not recommended because matcha is sensitive to light. A fully opaque package offers better colour protection.

Is recyclable packaging suitable for matcha?
It can be, provided the structure meets the required oxygen, moisture, light and sealing performance. Local recycling acceptance should also be confirmed.

What is the best packaging for ceremonial matcha?
A small opaque high-barrier pouch is a reliable primary package. For premium products, the pouch can be placed inside a branded tin or rigid box.

Can MSTPACK customize matcha packaging?
Yes. MSTPACK can develop custom pouch sizes, material structures, printing, finishes, zippers and sustainable packaging options based on the product and target market.
