What are the materials of coffee bags?

The material selection of coffee bags directly affects the preservation effect, environmental friendliness and cost of coffee. Currently, coffee bags on the market are mainly divided into three categories: ordinary materials, environmentally friendly materials and degradable materials. They differ in performance, sustainability and applicable scenarios.

Ordinary materials (traditional plastics/composite materials), common materials: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), aluminum foil composite materials (PET/AL/PE), aluminized film (VMCPP/VMPET); they have high freshness preservation performance (aluminum foil composite materials block oxygen, moisture, light, and extend the shelf life of coffee), low cost (economical and affordable for large-scale production), strong durability (tear resistance, high temperature resistance, suitable for long-distance transportation), suitable for nitrogen filling and preservation (composite bags + one-way valves can keep coffee fresh), etc., suitable for commercial coffee brands (need long-term preservation), low-cost mass production.

Environmentally friendly materials (partially recyclable/recyclable) Common materials: paper composite materials (kraft paper + PLA coating or water-based coating), aluminum-free high barrier film (such as ceramic coating materials), cloth packaging (cotton/linen + liner bags); its advantages are more environmentally friendly than traditional plastics (partially recyclable or using renewable materials), customizable design (such as kraft paper bags are suitable for printing brand logos), partially degradable (such as PLA coatings can be decomposed under certain conditions), Good air permeability (suitable for short-term storage of freshly roasted coffee); widely used in mid-to-high-end coffee brands (emphasizing environmental protection image), short-term storage of coffee (such as local roasters)

Common materials for degradable materials (completely biodegradable): PLA (polylactic acid) (corn starch-based), PBAT (degradable polyester),PHA (microbial synthetic material), compostable paper bags (compliant with EN13432 standards), etc.; its advantages are that it is completely degradable (decomposed into CO₂ and water under industrial composting conditions), reduces plastic pollution (suitable for areas with strict environmental regulations, such as the European Union), and is partially home compostable (such as some PLA/PBAT mixed materials); suitable for high-end boutique coffee (mainly environmental protection concept), short-term sales (such as markets, pop-up stores).

recycle coffee bag

How do you recycle coffee packaging bags?

First, we need to determine whether it is a recyclable packaging bag and check the recycling logo on the packaging (such as 1~7 numbers, FSC certification, etc.). Single materials (such as pure PE/PP bags, pure kraft paper bags) are easier to recycle than composite materials (such as aluminum foil + plastic).

Recycling steps

1.  Clean the residue
Empty the coffee grounds and wipe the inner wall with a damp cloth (grease will affect recycling).
If it contains an aluminum foil layer or plastic lining, you need to confirm whether the local recycling station accepts it (some need to be separated).

2. Classification
Pure paper bags → Put them in the "paper recycling" box.
Plastic/composite bags → Check whether they are marked with the "recyclable" logo, or send them to a special recycling point (such as a supermarket plastic recycling bin).
Aluminum foil bags → Some countries need to recycle them separately (such as the German "Gelbe Sack" yellow garbage bag).

3. Special treatment
One-way exhaust valve: usually made of PP/PE material, can be cut off and recycled separately.
Label/ink: Some environmentally friendly inks do not affect recycling, but local regulations need to be consulted.
